Medication Management

I, Dr. Theresa Gilliland, am a dual certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and a Family Nurse Practitioner. I am licensed in California and Colorado. I have a breadth and depth of knowledge that allows me to be a confident, effective, and empathic provider. I embrace a humanistic philosophy of holistic care for body, mind, and spirit and am committed to personalized, and comprehensive care for each patient. My passion for health, wellness, and having a quality of life, along with the belief that health care is a right for all people influences my practice. I stress at each visit that “the more one knows about their diagnoses, the more one will be able to manage their diagnoses.” Thus, disseminating knowledge about one’s mental health issues is paramount within my practice.

I have training and experience treating patients with psychiatric disorders and those with complex medical diagnoses across the lifespan. I have worked as a hospitalist, in the Emergency Department, in the Stroke unit, in outpatient clinics, county jails and federal and state prisons. I have also worked in Chemical Dependency and Rehabilitation facilities. My experience includes providing care in diverse settings including telehealth, mobile units in rural areas, and even in Antarctica over the winter.

I received my BS in Nursing from Humboldt State University in California, my MHA from Chapman University in California, my Family Nurse Practitioner certification from Sonoma State University in California, and my Doctor of Nursing Practice along with Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, certification from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. My DNP project focused on developing and teaching a biology of addiction course geared toward relapse prevention. I taught the course to a court-ordered substance use disorder population. My personal (family) and professional experience with addiction fueled my passion to develop the biology of addiction course. Also having raised my TBI daughter as a single mom, having worked a stroke unit, and having researched CTE, this background provides me with a deeper understanding and awareness of the neuropsychiatric aspects of mental health and its complexities.

I and my husband are avid outdoors enthusiasts. We like to hike, rock climb, mountain bike, telemark ski and enjoy going to the opera and ballet. I completed my very first YouTube video, in 2016, sharing the journey of us doing the John Muir Trail (JMT) in CA.
